Have you ever had a stretch where the phone just… stops ringing?
You’re doing good work. Your current customers are happy. But new inquiries have gone quiet, and you start wondering if something’s broken. Is it the website? Is it Google? Is it the economy? Should you be running ads?
We get it, because we’ve been there too. Recently we had one of those quiet stretches. Then, in the same week, two happy clients left us new Google reviews, and several new leads called us. Not a coincidence.
So we wanted to pull back the curtain and share exactly how new clients find Trulove Webworks. None of this is complicated, and almost all of it works for any local business, whether you’re a plumber in Conroe, a counselor in The Woodlands, or a landscaper in Magnolia.
Why Did the Phone Start Ringing After Two Reviews?
Think about how you choose a new business. You probably search Google, glance at the map results, and check the reviews before you ever click a website.
Your customers do the same thing. According to BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses. And it’s not just whether you have reviews. It’s when they were written. The same survey found that 74% of people care most about reviews from the last three months.
That means a business with 50 great reviews from three years ago can look less trustworthy than one with 20 reviews from this spring. Fresh reviews tell people, “This business is active, and people are still happy with them.”
Here’s the encouraging part: BrightLocal also found that 83% of people left a review when a business asked them to. Most happy customers are willing to do it. They just don’t think about it on their own.
How do you ask for reviews without feeling awkward?
This is the part most business owners dread. It can feel like you’re asking for a favor. But you’re really giving a happy customer an easy way to say thank you.
A few things that make it easier:
- Ask at the right moment. The best time is right after a “win,” when a customer says they love the finished project or thanks you for going above and beyond.
- Ask your best clients first. You don’t need to ask everyone at once. Start with the people you know had a great experience.
- Make it one click. Send a direct link to your Google review page so they don’t have to go hunting for it.
- Keep it personal. A quick text or email in your own words (“It was so great working with you. Would you mind sharing a quick review?”) works better than a formal template.
The goal isn’t a big review campaign. It’s a simple habit of asking a couple of great clients every month.
Is AI Search Changing How People Find Local Businesses?
Yes, and faster than most people realize.
More people are asking tools like ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, and other AI assistants questions like “Who’s a good web designer near Montgomery, TX?” BrightLocal’s 2026 survey found that 45% of consumers now use AI tools like ChatGPT to get business recommendations.
We’ve noticed Trulove Webworks showing up in those AI answers, and it isn’t luck. AI tools are trying to figure out one thing: Can this business be trusted? To answer that, they look at the same signals a careful customer would. Search Engine Journal points to recent reviews, a complete Google Business Profile, consistent business information across the web, and mentions from other trusted places online.
In plain terms, AI search rewards businesses that look real, active, and well-respected in their community. That’s why reviews matter even more now. They don’t just convince the person reading them. They help AI tools recommend you in the first place.
Why Do Community Connections Matter So Much?
People want to work with businesses they feel they know, even if they’ve never met you.
That’s a big part of why we’re so involved locally. Katelyn volunteers with and serves on the board of the Southwest Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, and is a graduate of Leadership Montgomery County and Leadership North Houston. We display those on our website, and not just to show off.
Those connections act like trust shortcuts. When a potential client sees that we’re invested in the same community they live and work in, it answers one of their biggest unspoken questions: “Are these people going to be around, and do they actually care?”
Your business probably has trust signals like these too. Maybe it’s a chamber membership, an industry certification, a local award, a nonprofit you support, or years in business. If they’re not visible on your website and Google Business Profile, you’re leaving credibility on the table.
Where Do Most of Our Clients Come From? Referrals.
If we’re honest, referrals are the backbone of our business, and they come from a few different places.
Past clients. The people we’ve built websites for are our biggest fans, and they tell their friends and fellow business owners. This is the best kind of marketing there is. Nielsen has found that 88% of people trust recommendations from people they know more than any other form of advertising.
People we network with. Chamber events, leadership groups, and coffee meetings aren’t just social. Over time, the people in those rooms get to know what we do and who we’re a good fit for. When someone mentions they need a website, our name comes up.
Partner businesses. This one surprises people. We’ve built relationships with companies that serve the same kind of clients we do but offer different services, like print shops and IT companies. They don’t build websites, and we don’t print business cards or fix servers. So when their clients need a website, they send them our way, and we do the same for them.
Think of it like a good doctor who refers you to a trusted specialist. Nobody’s competing. Everyone’s just helping the client get what they need.
Who could your referral partners be?
Ask yourself: Who already works with my ideal customer, but doesn’t do what I do? A home builder might partner with an interior designer. A dentist might partner with an orthodontist. A bookkeeper might partner with an insurance agent. A few solid partnerships can bring steady referrals for years.
What Do We Do When Things Get Quiet?
We reach out.
When we’re between projects, we put together a short list of local businesses that might be a good fit for us. (AI tools like Claude make building that list much faster.) Then we send 5 to 10 personal emails a day until someone responds.
Not a mass email blast. Real, individual notes to real people, explaining who we are and why we reached out. It’s simple, but it works because it’s consistent.
The Honest Truth: Momentum Is Everything
Here’s the part nobody puts in a marketing textbook.
We’ve noticed a clear pattern over the years. When we’re in “hustle mode” (asking for reviews, showing up at events, reaching out, connecting with partners, and bringing good energy every day), the work comes in. The moment we ease off, it gets quiet.
That’s not because any one activity is magic. It’s because they all build on each other. A new review makes you more visible on Google and in AI search. A networking event leads to a referral. A referral leads to a happy client, who leaves a review. It becomes a cycle, but only if you keep it moving.
It’s a lot like a flywheel. It takes effort to get it spinning, but once it’s going, every push adds speed. Stop pushing for too long, and it slowly winds down.
So if your phone has gone quiet, don’t panic. Pick one or two things from this post and start this week. Ask two happy clients for reviews. Reach out to one possible referral partner. Put your community involvement on your website. Small, steady effort adds up faster than you think.
Where Does Your Website Fit Into All of This?
Every single one of these paths, whether it’s a review, an AI recommendation, a referral, or a cold email, eventually leads people to the same place: your website.
It’s where they go to answer one final question: “Can I trust this business enough to reach out?” If your website looks outdated, doesn’t show your reviews and community connections, or makes it hard to contact you, all that hard work can fall flat right at the finish line.
That’s exactly what our Stress-Free Website Process is built for. We create websites that show off the trust you’ve already earned and make it easy for the right customers to take the next step. We even write the content for you.
If you’re ready for a website that supports everything else you’re doing to grow, we’d love to help. Book a free discovery call and let’s talk about what’s working for your business and where your website can do more.
