We recently wrote about why authentic content is becoming your best search visibility strategy — the short version is that Google’s latest spam update specifically targets mass-produced, AI-stuffed content, and rewards the businesses saying real, useful things about what they actually do.
Great, but “be authentic” isn’t exactly a to-do list. So here’s what that looks like in practice, for a local business that doesn’t have hours a day to spend on content.
Start With the Questions You Already Answer Out Loud
You don’t need to invent blog topics. You’re already writing them — you just haven’t typed them up yet. Think about the last month of phone calls, texts, and in-person conversations with customers. What did they ask before they booked? What did they need explained twice? What do you wish every customer knew before they called?
Turn Real Customer Questions Into Content
Those are your blog posts and FAQ pages. They’re more useful than almost anything a generic “content calendar” would generate, because they’re answering questions your real customers are actually asking, in language your real customers actually use.
Write Your About Page Like You’re Talking to a Neighbor
Most About pages read like they were written for a search engine: “Founded in [year], we pride ourselves on quality and customer service.” Nobody trusts that, because it could describe literally any business in the country.
Show, Don’t Just Claim
Try writing it the way you’d introduce your business at a backyard barbecue instead. Why did you start it? What do you actually care about getting right? What’s a story that shows it, rather than just claims it? That version is both more interesting to read and harder for a competitor to copy — which is exactly the point.
Use Your Real Photos, Even If They’re Not Perfect
Stock photography is one of the fastest ways to make a genuinely great business look interchangeable with every other business in your industry. A slightly imperfect photo of your actual team, your actual storefront, or your actual finished work builds more trust in three seconds than a polished stock image ever will. People can tell the difference, even if they couldn’t explain how.
Write Like You Talk, Then Edit Like a Professional
Authentic doesn’t mean unpolished. The businesses that do this well write a rough first draft in their own voice — the way they’d actually say it — and then clean up the grammar and structure without scrubbing out the personality. If a final page could have been written by any business in your industry, it’s been over-edited.
Keep Pages Current Instead of Publishing and Forgetting
A service page from three years ago, with pricing or offerings that have since changed, quietly tells both Google and your customers that nobody’s minding the store. Good content isn’t just about what you publish — it’s also about what you go back and fix.
Build a Quarterly Content Refresh Habit
A short quarterly pass through your key pages (services, FAQs, About) to update anything outdated does more for trust than most brand-new blog posts.
Where This Fits Into the Bigger Picture
Good content on your website is one piece of a larger trust picture. Before people ever get to reading it, they’re checking your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and the neighborhood apps they trust — we walked through all of that in Where Your Customers Are Really Looking: A Local Trust Checklist. And if you want the bigger-picture “why,” that’s covered in the original post on authenticity and search visibility.
Let’s Make Your Content Sound Like You
If writing (or rewriting) content that actually reflects your business feels like more than you have time for, that’s exactly where we come in — it’s part of what we handle inside our Stress-Free Website Process.
