“Should I be running Local Services Ads, regular Google Ads, or both?”
It’s one of the most common questions we hear from home-service business owners, and it’s gotten even more confusing lately. Google is moving Local Services Ads into the same platform as its regular Search ads, so now they live side by side in one account. It’s fair to wonder what the difference even is anymore.
If you’ve ever felt like you’re paying for Google ads without really knowing which kind is doing the work, you’re not alone. Let’s clear it up.
What’s the Difference Between the Two?
Both types of ads show up when someone searches on Google for a service like yours. The big differences are how you pay and how much control you have.
Here’s a simple way to picture it. Local Services Ads are like a referral service: Google vouches for you, sends you the customer, and charges you a fee for each introduction. Search ads are more like renting a billboard on the busiest road in town: you pay every time someone looks closely at it, and it’s up to your website to close the deal.
Local Services Ads
These are the ads that usually appear at the very top of Google, often with a “Google Verified” badge, your star rating, and a button to call or message you.
- You pay per lead (a call or message), not per click.
- Google checks your license, insurance, and background before you can run them.
- You don’t choose keywords. Google matches you based on your services and service area.
- Your reviews and Google Business Profile play a big role in how often you show up.
Google Search Ads
These are the text ads marked “Sponsored” that appear in search results and link to your website.
- You pay per click, whether that person contacts you or not.
- You choose (and exclude) the searches you want to show up for.
- You control the ad text and which page of your website people land on.
- Your website has to do the work of turning that click into a call.
The Pros and Cons of Local Services Ads
What’s great about them:
- You only pay when someone reaches out. That makes costs easier to predict, and Google automatically credits some leads it decides aren’t valid.
- Top-of-page placement. They usually show up above everything else, which is prime real estate.
- Instant trust. The Google Verified badge and your star rating do a lot of convincing before the customer ever calls.
- Simple to run. No keyword lists or ad copy to manage.
Where they fall short:
- Not every service qualifies. Local Services Ads cover specific categories, so some of your services may not be eligible.
- Less control. You can’t pick exact searches, and with the move to Google Ads, the option to set different bids for different services is going away. (We explain that change in Google Is Moving Local Services Ads Into Performance Max.)
- Heavily tied to reviews. If a competitor has more (and better) reviews, they’ll often get more of the leads.
- Not every lead is a good lead. You’re paying for the call, not the job, so price shoppers and wrong-number calls still add up.
The Pros and Cons of Google Search Ads
What’s great about them:
- More control. You can focus your budget on the services that matter most, like installations or replacements, instead of small repair calls.
- Works for any service. If a service isn’t covered by Local Services Ads, Search ads can still promote it.
- Sends people to your website, where you can show your work, reviews, guarantees, and what makes you different.
Where they fall short:
- You pay for every click. According to WordStream’s 2026 benchmarks, the average click in Home & Home Improvement costs $8.33, and the average cost per lead is about $90.92.
- More to manage. Keywords, ad text, budgets, and landing pages all need attention.
- More automation than before. Google recently moved many Search campaigns to AI Max, which gives Google more say in when your ads show and what they say. We break that down in What AI Max Means for Service Businesses.
- Only as good as your website. If your landing page is slow, confusing, or doesn’t build trust, you’re paying for visitors who leave.
So Which One Should You Choose?
There isn’t one right answer for every business, but here’s a simple way to think it through.
Local Services Ads are often a good starting point if:
- Your main services are covered by Local Services Ads.
- You have a solid number of strong Google reviews.
- You want predictable costs and don’t have time to manage a complicated account.
Search ads make more sense if:
- You want to grow a specific high-value service.
- Some of your services aren’t eligible for Local Services Ads.
- You have a strong website with clear pages for each service.
Many established service businesses run both. Local Services Ads capture the “I need someone now” calls, while Search ads go after the bigger jobs and the services Local Services Ads don’t cover. Now that both live in the same Google Ads account, it’s also easier to see how they work together.
What Both Options Have in Common: Your Website
It’s easy to assume Local Services Ads don’t need a website, since people can call you straight from the ad. But think about how people actually decide who to hire.
Before calling, most homeowners check a few places: your reviews, your Google Business Profile, maybe your social media, and your website. Even if your website is the fourth or fifth stop, it’s where they answer the big question: “Can I trust this company to come into my home?”
With Search ads, that’s even more direct. Every click you pay for lands on your website. If the page doesn’t make it easy to understand what you do and how to reach you, that $8 click walks away.
Either way, the ads get people’s attention. Your website is what earns their trust.
