Your Customers Aren’t Just Searching Google Anymore: What AI Search Means for Local Businesses

For years, getting found online largely meant one thing: showing up on Google.

Google is still incredibly important — and that isn’t changing anytime soon. But the way people search for businesses, services and information is expanding. More people are turning to AI platforms like ChatGPT to ask questions, research their options and get recommendations. And the latest traffic numbers show this isn’t a small trend anymore.

ChatGPT Is Now Seeing More Than a Billion U.S. Visits a Month

According to July 2026 estimates from Semrush Traffic Analytics, ChatGPT.com received approximately 1.09 billion monthly visits in the United States, an increase of about 48% compared with the previous year. During the same period, Bing traffic declined approximately 50%.

But here’s an important part of the story: Google isn’t disappearing. Google still received approximately 25.3 billion U.S. monthly visits and grew about 10.7% year over year.

So we’re not watching AI replace Google. We’re watching another major search and discovery channel develop alongside it.

Customers may still Google “pool builder near me.” But they can also ask ChatGPT “Who are some reputable pool builders in Montgomery County?” or “What should I look for when choosing a pool builder in Texas?” or “Compare some highly rated orthodontists near Magnolia that offer Invisalign.”

That changes what it means for a business to be visible online.

Search Is Becoming a Conversation

Traditional search usually starts with a short phrase:

  • roof repair Montgomery TX
  • psychologist near me
  • best orthodontist Magnolia TX
  • commercial electrician Houston

AI search allows people to ask longer and much more specific questions. Someone might ask: “I’m looking for a local electrician in the Houston area who works on commercial properties and has experience with large projects. What companies should I consider?”

Instead of receiving a traditional page of search results, the customer may receive a summarized answer containing a handful of businesses, sources or recommendations. That creates an entirely different opportunity.

The goal is no longer only: “Can my business rank on page one?” We’re increasingly asking another question: “Does the internet contain enough clear, trustworthy information about my business for search engines and AI platforms to understand when I’m relevant?”

“Showing Up in AI” Is Becoming a Real Marketing Channel

AI visibility used to be something we talked about as preparation for the future. We’re moving past that point. People are already using AI platforms as part of their research and decision-making process.

That doesn’t necessarily mean ChatGPT is going to send thousands of visitors directly to your website. Someone could learn about your company through an AI answer without immediately clicking your website. They might see your company mentioned, remember your name and search for you on Google later. They might visit your Google Business Profile. They might read your reviews. Or they might eventually visit your website directly.

The original discovery happened through AI, but your analytics may not tell that story clearly.

This Connects to Another Change We’re Seeing in Local Search

We’ve also been watching an interesting trend in Google Business Profile performance: calls and website clicks are declining even while other visibility signals remain strong. That’s important because it reinforces a bigger point: clicks alone are becoming an incomplete way to measure online visibility.

Customers have more ways to research businesses without immediately visiting their websites. They can explore businesses directly within Google Search and Maps, read reviews, look through photos and compare options. Now AI platforms are adding another layer to that process.

Together, these trends show why businesses need to think beyond website traffic alone when evaluating their online presence.

Does This Mean Traditional SEO Is Dead?

No.

Actually, many of the things businesses have been doing to improve traditional search visibility are still extremely valuable. AI platforms need information to understand businesses, too. Your website, Google Business Profile, reviews and mentions across the web all contribute to your overall digital presence.

The fundamentals still matter:

  • A well-structured website
  • Detailed service pages
  • Accurate business information
  • Strong local content
  • Helpful articles and resources
  • Customer reviews
  • Local citations and directory listings
  • Backlinks and mentions from trustworthy websites
  • Clear information about where you provide services
  • Consistent information about your business across the web

The difference is that we’re no longer optimizing for only one destination. We’re building a digital presence designed to help your business be understood and discovered across Google Search, Google Maps and AI-powered search experiences.

Your Website Has a New Job

Traditionally, businesses thought of their website primarily as something potential customers needed to visit. That’s still important. But your website also provides information that search engines and AI systems can use to understand your business.

Imagine two pool builders. The first has a five-page website that basically says: “We build beautiful pools. Contact us today for a quote.” The second has detailed information about custom pool construction, remodeling, outdoor living, the communities it serves, its construction process, frequently asked questions and real projects.

Which business has created a clearer picture of its expertise online? The second one.

That’s one reason we’re putting more emphasis on useful, specific website content instead of simply adding pages for the sake of SEO.

Reviews Matter Outside of Google Rankings, Too

Reviews aren’t just about getting five stars. They provide context.

A review saying “Great company!” is helpful for reputation. But a customer naturally saying “They remodeled our pool in Montgomery and helped us redesign the spa and outdoor living area” provides considerably more information about that customer’s experience.

Over time, these signals help create a clearer picture of a business online.

So How Do You Optimize for AI Search?

There’s no magic “rank #1 in ChatGPT” button. And businesses should be cautious of anyone promising one.

Instead, businesses should focus on building a strong digital footprint. That means clearly explaining your services on your website, creating genuinely useful content, strengthening your local presence, earning customer reviews, keeping business information consistent and building authority around the topics and communities your business actually serves.

In other words: don’t create content just because you want an AI platform to notice it. Create the best information about your business and expertise that you can. That gives traditional search engines, AI platforms and — most importantly — potential customers something valuable to work with.

We’re Moving From Rankings to Visibility

This may be the biggest change in how businesses should think about SEO.

For years, the conversation was: “Where do I rank on Google?” Rankings still matter. But the better question going forward is becoming: “When someone is looking for the services I provide, where does my business show up?”

That could be Google Search, Google Maps, an AI Overview, ChatGPT, another AI assistant, a local directory, an article or a direct search for your company after someone encountered your brand somewhere else.

And we’re finally starting to get better tools for measuring some of this new visibility.

Google Still Matters. The Opportunity Is Getting Bigger.

Businesses don’t need to abandon traditional SEO and chase the newest technology. Google remains enormously important.

The takeaway is much simpler: your customers now have more ways to find you. Businesses that build strong websites, useful content, great reputations and consistent local authority aren’t just positioning themselves for Google rankings. They’re creating the information and credibility that can help them become visible wherever customers choose to search next.

At Trulove Webworks, that’s how we’re beginning to think about SEO: not simply as getting a website to rank, but as building enough authority and clarity around a business that it can be found, understood and trusted across the modern search landscape.
