If you’ve noticed Google’s search results look a little different lately — a summary box sitting above the usual list of links — you’re not imagining things. That’s called an AI Overview, and it’s become one of the biggest changes to how Google works in years.
We talk to a lot of business owners who’ve heard the term but aren’t totally sure what it means for them. So let’s break it down.
What an AI Overview Actually Is
When you search for something on Google, an AI Overview is a short, AI-generated summary that appears at the top of the results page, above the traditional blue links. Instead of making you click through several websites to piece together an answer, Google’s AI reads through multiple sources and writes a summary for you right there.
It sounds small, but the scale is not: AI Overviews now reach over 2.5 billion people every month, according to Dataconomy, and by some counts, close to half of all searches now trigger one. For a lot of people, that summary box is the first — and sometimes only — thing they read.
How It’s Different From Regular Search Results
Traditional Google rankings are about where your website lands in that list of blue links. AI Overviews work differently. Google’s AI is choosing which sources to pull from and how to summarize them, based on things like how clearly a page answers the question being asked, how trustworthy and consistent the information is, and how well the content is structured.
That means a website can rank well the traditional way and still be left out of the AI Overview entirely — or the reverse. They’re related, but they’re not the same game.
Why This Matters If You Own a Local Business
Think about how people actually search these days: “best [service] near me,” “how much does [service] cost,” “is [service] worth it.” Those conversational, question-style searches are exactly what AI Overviews are built to answer directly. In fact, Search Engine Journal has reported that AI Overviews are increasingly the ones answering local search intent — the “who’s the best plumber near me” type questions that used to send someone straight to your website.
If your business gets pulled into that summary, you’re in front of someone right at the moment they’re deciding who to call. If you’re not, you may never even come up — no matter how nice your website looks or how well you used to rank.
The Good News
This isn’t something you need to panic about, but it is something worth paying attention to. Google rolled out a new way to actually measure this in Search Console, so instead of guessing whether you show up in AI search, it’s now something we can check directly.
That’s exactly what we dig into in Is Your Website Even Visible in Google’s AI Overviews? Here’s How to Find Out — including how to find out whether your site is currently showing up, and the handful of things that tend to make the biggest difference. If you’re curious where your business stands, that’s the next place to look — or book a free discovery call with Trulove Webworks and we’ll walk through it with you directly.
